Dickinson's environmental studies & environmental science department, one of the oldest and best established in the country, is remarkable for its range of activities. Sample opportunities include working with communities on environmental-justice issues, participating in field and laboratory research on forest responses to environmental stresses and working at the Dickinson College Farm.

Students choose to pursue either a B.S. in environmental science or a B.A. in environmental studies. In addition to fulfilling a set of core requirements, each student constructs a customized concentration based on a cluster of courses that fits his or her interests. The department’s resources include a geographic-information systems (GIS) laboratory, state-of-the-art instruments for chemical analysis and access to the Reineman Sanctuary, a forested wildlife preserve near campus, the Alliance for Aquatic Resource Monitoring (ALLARM), the Center for Sustainable Living (Treehouse) and the Center for Sustainability Education (CSE).

The environmental studies & environmental science department recognizes that solutions to the human predicament require an interdisciplinary effort. The goals of the program include providing a sound academic background and an opportunity for students to use their education through research and community engagement.
